With plans for the future, an everyday life that was rolling along and a life that felt full of possibilities, everything turned upside down from one day to the next. When the treatments were finally over, I thought that life would return to normal, but was instead faced with a reality that many rarely talk about – a long and unpredictable recovery where I myself had to try to understand what was normal and what was not.
In my lecture I talk about the expectation to “get well and move on”, about the gap between that image and reality, and about the journey that begins when the treatments end. About feeling alone in a process that continues long after active medical treatment has concluded and about having to face a new everyday life where the body no longer functions as it used to.
